Routing Protocols

As we know that Routing is the process of forwarding the information/data packets from source to the destination but the best route to send the packets is determined by the routing algorithm.

Types of Routing Protocols

There are 3 types of routing protocols explained in following diagram

Routing Protocols

In this section we will explain dynamic routing protocols which are used only for unicasting

Intra-Domain Routing Protocols: In this protocol the Routing algorithm works only within the domains (Autonomous System) these protocols are also called Interior Gateway Protocols (IGP’s).

Inter-Domain Routing Protocols: In this protocol the Routing algorithm works within and between domains (Autonomous System) these protocols are also called Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGP’s).

Autonomous System (AS): It is a collection of some networks and routers whose prefixes and routing policies are controlled and supervised by a single entity or organization. Network of a city may be an example of autonomous system.

  • A self-driving car is an example of autonomous system because it gathers information from its sensors and performs an action to achieve a goal.
