Routing Protocols

As we know, Routing is the process of forwarding the information/data packets from the source to the destination, but the best route to send the packets is determined by the routing algorithm.

Types of Routing Protocols

There are 3 types of routing protocols explained in the following diagram

Routing Protocols

In this section, we will explain dynamic routing protocols, which are used only for unicasting

Intra-Domain Routing Protocols: In this protocol, the Routing algorithm works only within the domains (Autonomous System). These protocols are also called Interior Gateway Protocols (IGPs).

Inter-Domain Routing Protocols: In this protocol, the Routing algorithm works within and between domains (Autonomous Systems). These protocols are also called Exterior Gateway Protocols (EGPs).

Autonomous System (AS): It is a collection of some networks and routers whose prefixes and routing policies are controlled and supervised by a single entity or organization. The network of a city may be an example of an autonomous system.

  1. A self-driving car is an example of an autonomous system because it gathers information from its sensors and performs an action to achieve a goal.
